3D Shapes

Kuraia 04.12.2017 Monday

Today I have done an activity on 3D shapes . There wasn’t much to learn from this activity because all there was were lessons to learn about how the site works and what to do whenever you have a 3D shape . But anyways it was a good lesson because it’s about 3D shapes and it gives me more clarification about it.

Prototec Maths Practise

Prototec Maths Tuesday 28.11.2017

Today In room 7 I have done a practise sheet on my basic facts . Although it was a stage 8 it wasn’t so challenging but only because I didn’t time myself . I pretty sure if I did , I would get less . Anyways from this activity I did learn about finding the ones ,tens ,hundreds and thousand places in decimals . Most times I would think you start the ones place on the right side, but actually it starts on the left side, which I have corrected myself . So from now on finding the ones, tens, hundreds and thousands places in decimals will be an easy task .

Descriptive paragraph - Fireworks Display

Staring in the night sky  BOOM! , a burst of color lit my eyes . A glamorous piece of art had left little droplets of golden meteorites falling to their doom . The aroma had instantly filled up my backyard with a gust of smoke waving past my nose . I started to find a no smoke area but the fog around me just blocked my way, although I could still feel the rough edges of my house and the crackling ground near the deck . BOOM! , with the thrill of another one , I rapidly stumbled up the stairs and noticed so many comets in the sky . It was like a gigantic waterfall in the air , but the taste of the fireworks wasn’t as good as my lavender t-shirt covered against my nose .

Jenascia - I liked how you described the scene with .

Angel - I was really impressed on how you described your senses, but your writing was extremely inspiring and interesting to read.

Chemical and Physical changes

What are Chemical changes ?
Chemical changes is a type of reaction that can’t be put back together, it’s irreversible. It’s when separating 1 molecule into 2 so it can join with another to make something new .

Facts about Chemical changes
  • Some chemical reactions produce energy while some of them collect energy
  • There are different types of chemical reactions like combustion and so on .
  • Chemical changes happen everyday

Example : The bowl of cake mixture can be made into a fully baked cake but it can’t turn back into the mixture.

What are Physical changes?
Physical change is when you break or damage something but can easily be put back together.

Facts about Physical changes:
・Most physical changes can be reversed, chemical changes cannot.
・A physical change is different from a chemical change.

Example: If you ice water then it will turn into ice and if you melt it , it will turn into
water.

Today at technology we were in cooking class and we made keesh . It was a fun process of making but heaps of jobs to do . I did the pastry while my partner did the inside which is the bacon , egg and so on . My main focus on this dish was to make sure that the pastry was well done.  I am about to taste it now and hopefully it would be like a dream come true .

Reading Comprehension - - A New life for Simple Machines

10 Electrical things we use everyday

  • Phone
  • Computer
  • Speaker
  • Ipad
  • USB
  • Electrical Watches
  • Headphones
  • Tv
  • Toaster
  • Fridge

How would our life be different without electricity  ?

There would barely be that much light inside houses at night , there would be no way of making refrigerated stuff or even having re-refrigerated stuff because there would be no place to store it , unless we have a deep well . There would be more kids playing outside because there are no phones and ipads for them to be playing on .

What sort of activities would be impossible without electricity ?

Being unable to check out fun places to go or book flights unless going to the actual place which might be far or maybe close to where you stay. Or even waking up late for school or a job interview and not have a car could make them more late by walking .

Where does New Zealand get their electricity from ?

From Hydropowers , geothermal powers and wind energy .

Why is burning fossils to generate electricity a problem ?

Because the smoke from burning fossils are destroying the atmosphere of earth, which is protecting the heat of the sun from burning us .

How can we get electricity without harming the planet ?

By having solar panels to collect the heat from the sun and use it as electricity .

Substances - A Particular kind of matter

Kinetic - Relating to or resulting of motion

Hydroelectric - The generation of power using flower water

Interacts - To have an effect on something or communicating with each other

Agitator - A person who urges others

Components - A parts or an elements of something

Information Report - Matariki

Kuraia

WALT - Write an Information Report

Success Criteria
  • Clearly explain what I am writing about
  • Use factual language
  • Summarise the information in my final paragraph
  • Begin with classification, definition , general comment in my opening statement

Title : Matariki

Matariki is a cluster of stars known as pleiades. These stars represent the ancestors and as well as stories behind it . Matariki has been around for a very long time from when they used the stars to tell time. Even now we celebrate it with feeds and even light trails . Plus the population has been increasing every year. Matariki isn’t just all about feeds it’s about the start of a new Year from how the maori’s used to tell time.

Matariki stars is the eye of God . There is a story about the earth, wind and heavens . When the God of Earth and Heaven split apart, the God of wind was furious about this situation , so he tore out his eyes and through it into the sky as his lookout . This story is very similar to when a guy named Tawhiri Matea had just found out his parents Ranginui and Papatuanuku had split apart . He got so enraged , that he mangled out his eyes and threw it up into the sky. It is very similar to each other and this is what most people believe how the stars were made .

Why is Matariki during May/June rather the the first of january, if it stands for the Maori New Year.  It is known that maori’s didn’t exactly get the time of the year right. All they did was study the stars to find out time for them . But it was not so long after that new people had traveled to Aotearoa and studied the real time. But when the maori’s figured out time , it was around May and June when they had there New Year because that was the time when the 7 stars had risen as well as a new moon . Which seems like a new beginning.

Matariki was used for helping people find their way . Long ago, nothing like compasses and so on were invented so the maori’s had to use the 7 stars to voyage across sea . These stars were able to get them as far as Rarotonga to Aotearoa. But it wasn’t so easy to get through the day with rough sea. As it is said that Matariki only appears near dawn or at night, but it depends. So they would sometimes just use constellations which is like normal stars to get their way across sea, but they had more difficulties.

Matariki is a very special event as it’s significance for a Maori New Year. The 7 stars has been through many history’s and many things it is essential for. As I said , Matariki is celebrated in many ways . But now , most people are just holding light trails and feeds. As well , in 2017 there will be 9 stars now . There is no reason in why and how there became 9 stars . But a Professor down in Waikato is a professional star researcher and has just discovered there will be more than 7 stars.

Polygons - Matariki stars

Kuraia

polygons shapes.PNG

In class today , my class had been doing an activity on making polygons from the matariki stars. As you can see I have made 12 polygons and it was a really fun activity. Although, it took time to do because I had to connect so many lines and there were plenty for me to do. From this activity I have learnt that any Irregular shapes that has the same sides as a normal shape, it will still be called the same. As an example, if there is an irregular shape that has 6 sides, it will be a hexagon. Anyways , it is a really interesting fact to have not known about and hopefully I would keep learning more new things from doing activities like this.

Anyways the shapes I made from these stars were
1.Pentagon
2. Heptagon
3. Polygon
4. Quadrilateral
5. Heptagon
6. Octagon
7. Hexagon
8. Pentagon
9. Hexagon
10. Hexagon
11. Pentagon
12. Quadrilateral

Reading Comprehension - Read Theory

Kuraia 16.06.2017

Screenshot 2017-06-16 at 11.32.59.png

Today I have done a reading comprehension on Read theory. It was really easy because reading the text was pretty understanding . I was able to answer all the questions by looking back at the passage several times. But at the end I was able to answer all the questions correctly . During this reading lesson I learnt to read the text properly other wise I’d keep going back to the passage and that’s how I was able to get through the text after answering my second question.
