Information Report - Matariki

Kuraia

WALT - Write an Information Report

Success Criteria
  • Clearly explain what I am writing about
  • Use factual language
  • Summarise the information in my final paragraph
  • Begin with classification, definition , general comment in my opening statement

Title : Matariki

Matariki is a cluster of stars known as pleiades. These stars represent the ancestors and as well as stories behind it . Matariki has been around for a very long time from when they used the stars to tell time. Even now we celebrate it with feeds and even light trails . Plus the population has been increasing every year. Matariki isn’t just all about feeds it’s about the start of a new Year from how the maori’s used to tell time.

Matariki stars is the eye of God . There is a story about the earth, wind and heavens . When the God of Earth and Heaven split apart, the God of wind was furious about this situation , so he tore out his eyes and through it into the sky as his lookout . This story is very similar to when a guy named Tawhiri Matea had just found out his parents Ranginui and Papatuanuku had split apart . He got so enraged , that he mangled out his eyes and threw it up into the sky. It is very similar to each other and this is what most people believe how the stars were made .

Why is Matariki during May/June rather the the first of january, if it stands for the Maori New Year.  It is known that maori’s didn’t exactly get the time of the year right. All they did was study the stars to find out time for them . But it was not so long after that new people had traveled to Aotearoa and studied the real time. But when the maori’s figured out time , it was around May and June when they had there New Year because that was the time when the 7 stars had risen as well as a new moon . Which seems like a new beginning.

Matariki was used for helping people find their way . Long ago, nothing like compasses and so on were invented so the maori’s had to use the 7 stars to voyage across sea . These stars were able to get them as far as Rarotonga to Aotearoa. But it wasn’t so easy to get through the day with rough sea. As it is said that Matariki only appears near dawn or at night, but it depends. So they would sometimes just use constellations which is like normal stars to get their way across sea, but they had more difficulties.

Matariki is a very special event as it’s significance for a Maori New Year. The 7 stars has been through many history’s and many things it is essential for. As I said , Matariki is celebrated in many ways . But now , most people are just holding light trails and feeds. As well , in 2017 there will be 9 stars now . There is no reason in why and how there became 9 stars . But a Professor down in Waikato is a professional star researcher and has just discovered there will be more than 7 stars.

Title : Old Rail track

Old rail track.png

It was a sudden day of clouds intercepting between the sun’s bright glimmer. I was cautious, watching all the animals getting ready to hibernate for a long season of Winter. In low tones, I moped myself just to get one touch of a deer. It had already started hibernating, I was just making sure I wouldn’t be already on the floor as I took a touch.

Pouncing on to me, I was precisely unable to get up, I felt the cold flowing above my skin as I tried rolling myself back home . I was nervous not knowing where to go but I was confident on where I was heading.I ended up in a straight platform of grass. It was a longer distance that I remember walking from my house to the forest. I felt like I was going towards the wrong way, but I went with my instincts and kept going.

As it started to get bumpy, I knew I was heading into trouble. I felt a rough type of wood stamping along my back as I knew I was on a old rail track. I tried moving along, but the rails kept pushing me back onto my starting point. I felt the rush of adrenaline pushing sweat through my face. I thought to myself, it’s only an old rail track, so there wouldn’t be any trains coming through. But then I thought again that constructors would have busted it down if it was in no need. Thinking of trains had made me hear a sound of a train's whistle. I knew I was hallucinating, but as the sound got nearer and lounder. I startled with fear, pushing my way through the rails.

My fifth try and I could barely even get over the rails. The train was getting closer and closer but as I heard a sound of roars,  which I knew belonged to a pack of lions. I was horribly scared knowing I would die one way or the other. I tried my hardest and as the lions appeared in my sight, with their jaws ready to gobble me up. The train suddenly came which scared them off, pushing me towards the grass and off the track, well I mean tracks that look old but are still in use.

I waited for an hour to rest my legs and arms and shifted myself towards a tree to help me get up. I walked liked there was a stick in my leg with tears strolling down my face. As I appeared home, there they were. My parents struggling to find out where I was. They helped me in getting inside, curing me with an ice pack on my bruised leg and arm and a nice cup of Hot chocolate in my hands, ready to be down in my stomach.

Screenshot 2017-02-17 at 11.36.25 AM.png

In my maths results I got the same level as before but as you can see my score has only gone up by 4. I think during my maths test it was pretty easy .But when time was running out and I had to do about 16 questions I quickly just looked at it and clicked the answer.Never knowing if it really was right. So for my next goal I want to aim for a 5B.

Kiwi kids news 2

Kiwi Kid’s News - Jupiter’s Moon spewing water jets

jupiter
New evidence has shown that Jupiter’s icy moon Europa throws jets of water out into space. Scientists first reported the behaviour in 2013 using the Hubble telescope, but have now made a follow-up sighting. It is significant because Europa is one of the most likely places to find microbial life beyond Earth because of its huge ocean of liquid water. Flying through the jets with an instrumented spacecraft would be an effective way to test the possibility. Scientists are also looking at the possibility of attempting to capture a sample of water and bring it back to Earth for more detailed biological analysis. The suggestion is that the jets reach several hundred kilometres in height before then falling back onto Europa. The calculation based on the 2013-reported work estimated a volume of water equivalent to an Olympic swimming pool could be being spewed into space about every eight minutes.

Questions
Who is the main person or group in this article? The scientists who discovered about Jupiter's moon spewing out water jets.
What was the key event from the news article? About Jupiter’s moon spewing out water jets.
Where did this event take place? At the planet Jupiter’s moon.
When did this event take place? In 2013
In your own words describe what happened in the news article? In my own words this article is about Jupiter's moon is spitting out water . Scientists started noticing it in 2013 and now they are wanting to get a sample of that water.
Find out where this event took place and include some information about this place. This event took place on Jupiter's moon . These moons are also the closest thing to orbit around Jupiter and the 4 largest moons are Europa , Ganymede , Callisto and Io. Also that the moon Europa is the moon that is shooting out the water jets .
Tell us when this event happened and explain what might happen in the future. It all started in 2013 and probably in the future Jupiter might be a planet for people to live on with life.
Explain in your own words why this event took place. Well in the article , the water jets go up very high about 700 kilometres high before falling down back onto the planet and I pretty sure that the moon is what's sucking up all the water and shooting it back down.
Use the Dictionary in the bottom right hand corner to find the meaning of 3 words from the article.
Microbial - It is a life that is very old on earth
Significant - Something important that is worth of attention
Equivalent - Something that is equal

In my reading test I got a 3P as you can see and I’m not very proud of it. This was a pretty low mark for me to get even with the other scores I got through the year it has all been 3’s and at my year level my expected level should be in the 4’s. Anyways next year I will try more harder to achieve my goal and try get a 4A.

Apple pastry

Kuraia

IMG_20160909_112940.jpg

We all gathered in room 8 to see what we were making. There was pastry , tremendous apples , brown sugar , baking paper and essentials like knives and spoons.

I was considering that we were planning on making apple pies but really it was just the same as apple pies but designing it on how you want it. As you can see, this was my boring design . I am not artistic but you probably already knew it when you saw my design.

As I took a piece of my apple pastry , Blahhhhhhh. It wasn’t so satisfying . Apples didn’t really match with pastry. The juice from the apples came out of the apple and it was mixed with the pastry but out of this dish I thought that plane pastry was more tempting than apple pastry.

Anyways it was enjoyable cooking it.

Main idea Millionaire.PNG

Today in class I have been doing a reading game where I have  to read the a  story then answer the question given . This game is very similar to who wants to be a millionaire.  Every time I answer a question correctly, I move up to the next prize, if I answer all of them correctly then I get to $1 million which is the top prize.

During the 2nd week of school I have been testing myself on solving maths problems using order of operations. It was quite hard at the beginning  but I kept practising  few times and 10 was my best score.  I know if I know my times tables off by heart and kept practising I will just get better and better.   I bet in a few weeks time I can score 15 or more.
