Omaru Creek Poem

Omaru Creek
You should take a little peek
at Omaru Creek
It’s dirty and rotten
and people have forgotten
It’s important to us
but we don’t make a big fuss.
We need to clean the creek and make it healthy again
It’s not too hard, just use your brain
We need your big voice
Just make the right choice
So help us save the creek
Because it’s special and unique

Omaru Creek Flows

Kuraia 17.03.2017

On Wednesday, Room 8 and 7 had a little visit to Omaru Creek . We were each given papers to build boats to observe the velocity of the creek, which is the speed of it . Sliding our boats in ,it was going very fast but started to stop coming to the near bushes on the side . Most of the boats stopped at the same place and a few collapsed on the way there. I was very surprised that Omaru creek flows and I hope it starts to flow more around the whole creek .

Omaru Creek

Kuraia - Omaru Creek 03/03/2017

Omaru creek is a long river filled with old chip packets, empty beer bottles to broken chairs and umbrella’s. The pipes are clogged up with filthy stuff as well as wet wipes being flushed down the drains and into the creek. This had started when a sewer pipe had started leaking a few weeks ago.

A maintenance crew came out to help the habitat of cat fishes, crabs , eels and so on. Breaking their backs to pick up the rubbish and restoring freshwater again. Pulling out seaweed from the top of the water and clearing the surrounding. But as you can see ,it’s still polluted.

There have been eels floating to the surface of the water , from dieing in the filthy habitat there living in, and all those time we’ve been observing the river of what we can do,there haven’t been that much sight seeing of eels or cat fishes.

So for my school and I ,have a responsibility of caring for omaru creek, and from my observing, I think we should take out all the rubbish and pull out vines that aren't very crucial for the creatures. Let’s start caring for our environment. So I hope ,that when all this misery is over, our creek wouldn't look like this.

Omaru creek

Kuraia 02/03/2016

Today , we have been given an article about a guy name Tamati ,who tells a story about how the creek used to look like and what he used to do in the creek here.

So here are some questions given to me about the creek .

  1. What was the stream like, when tamati was a kid?
There was fresh water with sea creatures living in them and it wasn’t polluted like how it is now.

2. What is the river like now ?
It is polluted with not that much creatures in it and there are so many rubbish inside the water.

3. Why is it bad ,that the river has changed?
Because ,some people like me want a safe habitat for the creatures inside the river.

4. Why is the river important?
Because it’s a habitat for the eels, cat fishes, crabs and fishes.
